Press Release[]
The Gang is ripping straight from the headlines - Inflation, US-Russian relations, mental health, gender equality, injury liability, gun control, and… celebrity-branded products. But here’s a headline for you: “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Returns for Season Sweet 16!”
But there’s nothing sweet about them as Ronald “Mac” MacDonald (Rob McElhenney), Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day), Dennis Reynolds (Glenn Howerton), Dee Reynolds (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank Reynolds (Danny DeVito) yearn for the past as they attempt to survive in 2023.
This year alone, Mac battles with allergies and long-distance dating, Charlie takes on his long-forgotten sisters, Dee fights for rent control and women’s athletics, Frank wrestles for his gun, and Dennis struggles to improve his mental health. At the end of the day, they’re navigating 2023 with 16 years of baggage as a few figures from their past rear their heads.[3]
The record-extending 16th Season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is Executive Produced by creator Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Michael Rotenberg, Nick Frenkel, Megan Ganz, Rob Rosell, David Hornsby, Scott Marder and Victor Hsu for FX Productions.[4]
News[]
On December 10, 2020, it was announced that FXX renewed the show for season 16, 17 and 18.
Filming occurred from January - March 2023.
In episode 66 of The Always Sunny Podcast, Glenn Howerton stated that the season could be released in June 2023.[5] This was later confirmed with an announcement on the official Always Sunny Twitter account, which revealed a release date of June 7th.[2] In the same podcast episode, Rob McElhenney alluded that an episode of the season came together "at the last minute" featuring Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame.[5] On April 28, this was further teased by an image shared on Rob's Twitter account featuring the two actors on the set. A running gag in the episode will have Charlie confuse Cranston for his Malcolm in the Middle character Hal, and Paul for Malcolm himself.
In episode 67 of The Always Sunny Podcast, Glenn Howerton confirmed that Nina Pedrad - who previously co-wrote the Season 15 episode, "The Gang Replaces Dee With a Monkey" with him - would be directing an episode of Season 16.[6]
Heath Cullens was also confirmed to have returned to direct at least one episode,[7] and Megan Ganz discussed directing a bowling episode in The Always Sunny Podcast.
The official trailer was released on May 3, 2023.
Gregory Scott Cummins (recurring character, Luther McDonald) shared on his Facebook that he would be returning for Frank Shoots Every Member of the Gang "with a little surprise character twist".
During a twitter spaces chat with Glenn Howerton, one of the guest speakers stated he was the son of one of the actors playing a mobster in The Gang Gets Whacked. The bowling alley that The Gang Goes Bowling was filmed at is owned by his father. Glenn did not appear to know this.
