It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia was renewed for a seventeenth season on December 10, 2020.[1] It began airing on July 9th, 2025.[2]
Press Release[]
The gang hits their prime.
Seventeen seasons on, Ronald "Mac" MacDonald (Rob McElhenney), Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day), Dennis Reynolds (Glenn Howerton), Dee Reynolds (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank Reynolds (Danny DeVito) return to shamelessly shed their "niche" label for grander aspirations.
They'll exploit cross-network promotion to increase market share; they'll scapegoat one of their own to avoid a PR backlash; they'll risk everything for a handshake with the Saudis; they'll bend the laws with side hustles to pad their pockets; and they'll change everything about themselves to appeal to a broader audience.
And sure, like any corporate goon, the Gang craves money and parasitic social privileges. That's been plain since 2005. But they're also human beings. They crave love.. respect... conditional freedom... constant adulation... histrionic amounts of attention... non-stop gratification... and unfiltered, slaphappy eroticism.
In Season 17, they'll chase down them all.
And the money. Obviously, the money. They don't want to spend the rest of their lives working like dogs.

News[]
On December 10, 2020, it was announced that FXX renewed the show for season 16, 17 and 18.
According to Glenn Howerton, the writer's room for the upcoming seventeenth season began in August 2024, with shooting beginning on October 15, 2024.[4][5]
On August 13th, in response to a fan asking for some behind the scenes information from the writers room, Rob McElhenney responded with a group picture showing himself and Charlie Day, as well as seven other writers. Pictured are Keyonna Taylor, John and Dave Chernin, Ross Maloney, Nina Pedrad, Javier Scott, and David Hornsby.[6] Although Javier Scott has never received a writing credit on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, he was previously credited as an "office production assistant" on Season 15. Megan Ganz and Scott Marder were confirmed not to be returning as writers by Dave and John Chernin citing "six or seven writers, plus the three guys",[7] Marder and Ganz were initially listed on the Writers Guild of America West's website[8], but later removed.[9]
Filming wrapped up on December 4th, 2024.[10]
The first episode of the season was stated to explore what Dennis was doing behind the cameras during the Abbott Elementary crossover. The season premiered July 9, 2025 on FXX and was available on Hulu the following day.[11]

Trivia[]
- A crossover episode with Abbott Elementary began shooting on October 2nd, 2024, just before shooting commenced for Season 17 of Always Sunny.[26] The episode, titled "Volunteers", is the ninth episode of season four. The Sunny half of the crossover, filmed entirely on Abbott's sets and shot in the style of a typical episode, was written by Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, and Keyonna Taylor, and directed by Todd Biermann.[13] According to Abbott's Patrick Schumacker, the first episode of Season 17's production order was the crossover episode, which they had to start production on "a little early" so that it could play off of the Abbott episode.[27]
- Following his legal name change in June 2025, Rob McElhenney is now credited as "Rob Mac".[28]
