Plot[]

11:30 AM, On a Friday, Still Ireland

Dennis, Mac and Dee are preparing for a hiking trip. Frank comes by, loaded with gear, to prove to Charlie he is still useful, just in case he or Shelley need food and drinks. Mac spies Charlie at the far end of the trail's start, looking out over the cloudy skies. Charlie reveals that the whole thing was a ruse, asking them to go with him and Shelley on a hike. Charlie reveals that Shelley is dead. As proof, Charlie has Shelley's body in a body bag. Dennis refuses to be a part of this, fearing for his back, but Charlie convinces them all to come along with him up the mountain.

The Gang begins the walk up to the top, each member holding up the body bag. Eventually, Dee gets tired, asking why they can't just use a sled or a wagon, but Charlie tells her that doing so will ruin the tradition. Dennis' back starts acting up, so he suggests burning the body and carrying the ashes up the mountain. Mac suggests that he can consecrate the ashes, but Charlie shoots down both of these ideas. Frank asks Charlie if he wants any of the snacks, at which point Mac and Dee also asks, but Frank tells them the snacks are just for Charlie. Dennis suggests chopping up or melting the body, like Frank claims, he did to Dee's "doctor guy". Dee is concerned, so Frank tells her that the doctor showed up at that castle, only to see that Dee was not there, and so Dennis poured hot oil over him. Dee, shocked, lets go of the bag, causing the weight of bag to force everyone else to drop it as well. Dennis and tells her that the oil wasn't even that hot, but she asks him if she used the murder hole. Dennis tells her he did not know what to do when the doctor showed up and Dee was not there. He tells that, per the castle's wishes, he "enjoyed him". Dee starts to leave, but Charlie tries to get her to stay, pointing it was her who caused Shelley's death. Dee, visibly livid, storms off and abandons them.

Mac admits that the body feels heavier without Dee. Dennis explains that Dee was able to support so much of the body's weight because her scoliosis turned it into petrified wood. Dennis trips, causing to let go of the body. Charlie asks him if he is okay, but Mac notices that the body feels less heavier without Dennis. Dennis suggest it may have been the "banshee curse", but Charlie begins to suspect he wasn't actually carrying the body. Mac notices the trail-marks and sees that Dennis was dragging, making it feel heavier, until he tripped. Mac, in anger, drops his end of the body, causing to fall onto the ground. Dennis admits it is true, but only did it out of concern for his back. Frank immediately notices a big hill coming up further on the hike, and asks how they are going to get the body up there. Dennis suggests sliding it up the hill, but then remembers that Frank brought along a tent. Charlie agrees to the plan, before helping Frank set up the tent. Using the tent to pull the body along, they are able to climb the hill.

Just as they grab for snacks, the body starts to slide down again. Dennis sees that by now, the body is probably all mushy, so Mac suggests dumping out the liquids inside to lighten the load. Mac starts to see himself as a problem-solver, so he adds it to his list of what he identifies as. After hearing the word "Dutch", Charlie revealed that Mac is not actually Dutch. They knew he would be so annoying about his Irish heritage, so they paid his mom to tell him this is false and he is actually Dutch. However, the plan backfired and Mac became more annoying as a result. After asking Mac to get rid of his shamrock tattoo as well, Mac, in anger, leaves.

Charlie, Dennis and Frank continue carrying the corpse up the mountain. now that Mac is gone, the load feels a lot heavier. Dennis, tired, calls a break. Dennis suggests that there are still other solutions. Namely, chopping up the body. Charlie however, wants to give him a dignified send-off, noting his hard-working life and how hard he fought to breathe when fluid was filling up his lungs. Upon hearing that Shelley's lungs were filled with fluid when he died, Dennis immediately recognizes that Shelley died of COVID-19, causing Charlie to suspect that he might have infected him as he also had it, despite denying so. Charlie states it must have been him, since was the only one who was not vaccinated. At this point, Frank he was also unvaccinated, only using a homemade variant under orders from the President, after hearing a conspiracy theorist saying that the government-issued vaccines would allow the government to control your thoughts. Dennis, fed up with the arguing, leaves, with his back in pain. Frank apologizes to Charlie for possibly giving Shelley COVID-19; Charlie forgives him quoting what Shelley said earlier "a Kelly always forgives". Frank also apologizes for not being Charlie's real dad, but tells him he will always be there for him when he needs him the most. Frank offers Charlie some Gatorade. When Charlie drinks it, it turns out to be piss. He tries to wash it out with the water in the other bottle, but it is also full of piss. Charlie angrily storms off, intending to finish the job himself. Frank offers to help him, but Charlie turns him down.

Back at Patty's Pub, Mac, Dennis, Dee and Frank express how their experiences in Ireland have led them to hate the country. Dee expresse how she never wants to see any of them again, and Mac tells her wish will be granted once he figures out who he is. Upon hearing this, they all scream at him that he is Irish. The Waitress, covered in dirt from the bog, orders them to be quiet. Dee loudly insults her. Dennis calls the idea of having everyone in the world speak at certain volume to be socialism, which he refuses to stand for. Mac expresses that freedom of volume is the American way. When she loudly screams at them that they are not in America, Frank tells her that they are America. They carry it wherever they go and they don't leave America behind because they love their country. The words hit the Gang hard, as they realize they did the exact same thing when they backed out of the hike.

Meanwhile, it is raining, and Charlie is still carrying the body. After slipping, Charlie breaks down in tears, apologizing to Shelley for having failed him. He tells him that having to do this i not fair, as he was never there for him when he needed him the most. He tells him that he should have been the one carrying him, and now that he is gone, he is happy as he doesn't have to wait for him to be there for him. As all hope seems lost, the Gang arrives in a truck to assist Charlie with the body. They apologize for leaving him behind. Charlie loads the body into the truck. They drive up the cliff and finally throw it over. Unfortunately, it is low tide, so the body hits the ground. Dennis suggests that they climb down and throw the body into the water; they vote no and decide to go back to Philadelphia. On the way down, Frank suggests stew for everyone. They all refuse, so Mac offers that they go for McDonald's instead, which they all agree to, chanting "USA!" on the way down.

Trivia[]

  • As of this episode, Charlie's father Shelley Kelly is dead.
  • Mac's shamrock tattoo last made an appearance in "The Gang Gets Held Hostage."
  • In the form of wardrobe detailing: While hard to see, Charlie's decrepit Vans have been swapped out for a newer, more durable pair. This was likely done to avoid damaging the originals and possibly for the comfort of Charlie Day, who spends the entire episode outdoors and in mud and torrential downpour.
