"The Gang Hits the Road" is the second episode of the fifth season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Synopsis[]
The Gang tries to expand their horizons by going on a road trip to the Grand Canyon.
Plot[]
11:00 AM On a Tuesday, Philadelphia, PA
Dennis, Mac, Charlie, and Frank are loading up Dennis' Range Rover with a trailer attached for a road trip to the Grand Canyon, although Charlie backs out at the last second due to his fear of leaving Philadelphia. They intend to leave before Dee arrives, but Dee shows up earlier than usual to the bar after buying a new car to replace the one that was destroyed. Dee invites herself along, and Charlie reverses his decision, stating being left to run the bar alone is worse than leaving Philadelphia.
As the gang leaves, they remark on Charlie never having left outside Philadelphia, and Charlie reveals he has never done many other things such as never having eaten various common fruits before. The gang decides to head to the local Italian market to have Charlie try fruits for the first time, but they are stuck behind a cyclist on the road. Mac intends to scare the cyclist by throwing a beer bottle close to him, but hits the cyclist dead on, causing the cyclist to fall and they run over the bicycle. They speed away from the recovering and angry cyclist.
They return to the bar and discover running over the bicycle has incapacitated the Range Rover. While Dee uses the restroom, Frank salvages their trip by taking Dee's car without her knowing. As they leave with Dee's car with the trailer attached, Dee furiously catches up to the gang at a red light. Setting off together again, they complain about the lack of room in Dee's car compared to the Range Rover. Dennis and Frank offer to sit in the trailer instead, while Mac, Charlie, and Dee argue in the front over the new car's lack of a CD player.
The gang arrives at the Italian market. Dennis and Frank set out to find furniture to sit on in the trailer, Dee finds a restroom again, and Mac takes Charlie to try some fruits for the first time. Everyone tries to haggle with their purchases: a pear, wicker chairs, a French press coffee maker, a "piss jar", and a Soul Asylum cassette tape. Mac and Charlie attempt to hot-wire Dee's car to leave without her again, but are caught. Charlie trades places with Frank before they set off.
Dennis and Charlie enjoy their newfound setup in the trailer until their camping stove slides through the taped opening of the trailer door. They eventually agree to compensate for the lost stove by destroying their wicker chairs to burn as a fire inside the trailer to cook hot dogs.
Mac, Dee, and Frank begin playing drinking games to pass the time, but Dee complains about not being able to drink as the driver. She eventually spots a young hitchhiker and uses him to drive the car so she can drink. Soon after, Mac and Frank are asleep while a drunk Dee finds out the hitchhiker is running away from home to go to California. Dee carelessly empties her "piss jar" out the passenger window, where its contents splash over Mac's face through his open window. Mac angrily forces the hitchhiker to pull over, and they see smoke coming out of the trailer. They open the trailer to discover Dennis and Charlie passed out due to the smoke of their burning wicker chairs.
It is nighttime as the gang hoses out the trailer and moves a sofa into the trailer. The entire gang decides to ride in the trailer except for Charlie, citing the car interior now smells like piss. As they continue their trip with Charlie riding in the car with the hitchhiker, Dennis questions the safety of picking up hitchhikers. Mac reassures the hitchhiker is harmless since he performed an "ocular patdown" on the hitchhiker as part of his security process and seeing himself as the "sheriff" of their bar. Incredulous at Mac's statements, the gang decides to go to sleep.
The next morning, the gang wakes up to find themselves back in front of their bar. They go inside to find Charlie, who explains that he requested the hitchhiker to drop him off back at the bar last night and promised to take the rest of the gang to the Grand Canyon. An enraged Dee explains the hitchhiker simply detached the trailer and stole her car. Dennis sarcastically reminds the gang that Mac had cleared the hitchhiker of being a security threat. The episode ends as the gang begins to play the same drinking game as they had done in the car.

Trivia[]
- It's revealed in this episode that Charlie has never left Philadelphia, eaten a pear, blueberries, or strawberries.
- Technically, Charlie actually has left Philadelphia before this episode: in "The Gang Gets Invincible", he and Frank follow the rest of the Gang to the Eagles' tryout at a high school in Bucks County, PA, which is outside the city limits of Philadelphia. But Bucks County is immediately adjacent to Philadelphia County, and is considered part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area, so Charlie probably doesn't consider that really leaving Philadelphia. Charlie will however, physically leave Philadelphia in the Season 6 episode "The Gang gets stranded in the woods" where the gang travels from Philadelphia to Atlantic City now Charlie was tied up, had a sack on his head and was put in the trunk, later the gang gets stranded in the woods as the title suggests but Dennis and Charlie hitch-hike to Atlantic City .
- In this episode when Charlie and Mac are trying to hot wire Dee's car, Charlie says: It's black to yellow! The colors Black and Yellow are It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia theme colors.
- When Frank opens the back door of the U-Haul, after Charlie and Dennis light the chairs on fire, he opens the door with no resistance, even after Dennis held the door open with duct tape.
- The first time Sweet Dee pulls up with her new car, it has a trailer hitch on it. After the gang runs over the bicycle and return to the bar, Frank says, "I have an idea" and they pan to Sweet Dee's new car, it doesn't have the trailer hitch on it anymore. They then show the gang taking off in the car without Dee.
- If you use the location for Paddy's Pub shown in the episode "The Great Recession", 3rd and Dickinson Streets, then the Italian Market is roughly 1.1 miles from Paddy's. (Source: http://goo.gl/maps/DOpYg)
- Some places that Dee and Mac erroneously think are states include "South Virginia" (twice), "East Virginia", and Philadelphia, much to Frank's amusement. Mac and Charlie later guess Detroit and Milwaukee, further exasperating Frank.
- Dee will get her piss on Mac again in The Gang Goes to a Water Park, and he will later get pissed on by Dennis, Charlie, and Frank in The Gang Texts.
Quotes[]
- Charlie: I've never eaten a pear.
- Mac: What? How is that possible?
- Charlie: Pears weird me out, dude. Where do you start with a pear? The top? The bottom?
- Mac: I'm calling a lot of people 'Bozo' now. It's like my new thing.
- Mac: I want my 35 cents back. Charlie, give him the pear.
- Charlie: I can't, I just ate it.
- Mac: The whole thing?
- Charlie: Yeah, it was pretty gross.
- Mac: The stem and then the, and the core?!
- Charlie: You didn't tell me not to eat the stem dude!
- Mac: Did you eat the stickers that are all over it?!
- Charlie: Yeah, it was gross.
- Mac: Of course it's gross, it's a sticker bro!
- Charlie: I eat stickers all the time dude!
- Mac: Oh my god, this whole thing is a disaster... I... I'm going back to the car...
- Charlie: Nice tape job but, I noticed you stopped at the grill.
- Dennis: Ran out of tape but, I measured the opening of the door and it's shorter than the height of the grill.
- Mac: I'm bored. Let's play a drinking game: Name all fifty states, drink while you think.
- Dee: Fine... go. Maine.
- Mac: New Hampshire.
- Dee: Vermont.
- Mac: Philly.
- Dee: North Virginia.
- Mac: South Virginia.
- Dee: East Virginia.
- Mac: South Virginia. Did I say that already?
- Dee: (very drunk, to the hitchhiker they've just picked up) So you're headed to Hollywood, huh?
- Hitchhiker: Yeah.
- Dee: Oh my god. Oh my god, you're running away from home aren't you?
- Hitchhiker: Uh, yeah, maybe.
- Dee: Oh no, no, no, sweet baby, they're gonna eat you alive in Hollywood. Oh, you're definitely gonna end up doing gay porn with this tiny little body of yours. Oh man, kid...
- Mac: I did an ocular patdown on him.
- Dennis: What?
- Mac: I'm saying I did an ocular assessment of the situation garnered that he was not a security risk and I cleared him for passage.
- Dennis: Well, how exactly do you view yourself within the context of our group?
- Mac: The...sheriff of Paddy's.
