"The Gang Replaces Dee With a Monkey" is the fourth episode of the fifteenth season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and the 158th episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
When the Gang suspects Dee is menopausal, they scramble to find a new employee for Paddy's Pub. Meanwhile, Dee decides to put her acting career on hold in order to mentor young actors.
Plot[]
11:00 AM, On a Thursday, Philadelphia, PA
Dee has a nervous breakdown and leaves the bar. mac questions this, so Frank asnwers that she is becoming "menopausal", explaining how he went through the same thing when Barbara had it. They pick up on some Dee's changes, including her smell. Charlie brings up when he slept with Dee and how he feels when he is around her. Mac notes this to be an example of a hostile work environment, so he suggests they legally fire her. Dennis approves the idea. Frank jokingly suggests that even a monkey could do Dee's job.
Dee visits a man named Jeffrey, rehearsing a scene for her character. She tells him she has been in character all week, and she really wants this role. Jeffrey does explain she has cut in front of the other actresses. Dee requests to be put through to the director, mentioning the money she spent on acting classes should not be wasted
Dennis tells Mac and Charlie that with a new employee, they will have a lot more free time, so they should start considering taking vacations. As they argue across the fact of "states being within states", Frank comes in, with a monkey. Franks back ups this decision, claiming that hiring another person would mean they would have to pay them, but with animals, you don't have to, bringing up his earlier statement on how a monkey could do her job. Dennis tells him that they need actual people, so Frank demonstrates the monkey's obedience, by asking for a beer, to which it complies. Dennis is still angry, saying it wouldn't run the bar if they go on a vacation. The monkey gives Dennis a beer, which he immediately praises, convincing him to keep the monkey. Frank orders three more beers.
Dee starts up an acting class. She blurts out three random words, and asks them to repeat what she said. When one student does, she tells them they have broken the first rule of acting: they listened. She tells them that if they are listening, they are not talking, and if they are not talking, they won't get paid. They will be extras. The second rule is to ignore reality. Ignore the co-stars, everything, even the script. Don't ask questions because it shows that you don't know something, making you look weak.
The rest of the Gang are arguing about vacation destinations. Unfortunately, all of Charlie's picks are inside Pennsylvania. Dennis suggests that wherever they go, they bring the monkey with them, and even suggests letting more monkeys work at the bar. Frank supports this idea, as they will be looking for jobs due to Hollywood refusing to harm animals. They decide to hand the destination choice over to fate: write a destination on a napkin, put it in a bowl, draw one at random.
Two students at the class are rehearsing. She teaches her class to be loud when acting, thus drawing the audiences attention. She reveals that she wrote the script they are reading from. When one student asks if she will be writing all the scenes, she asks his co-star how it makes him seem to her. She replies it makes him look weak. She praises her and asks the male co-star to see her after class. She explains that people in power will try to bang you, whether or not it is required.
Dennis draws from the bowl. The location on the napkin reads "Yellow". Suggested by none other than Charlie, he defends this, citing how Dennis turned his other suggestions. Dennis draws again. The next location, suggested by Mac is "Purple". Dennis is angry, so Mac tells him he did not understand what they were supposed to do. Dennis decides to shake it up, by having them instead write down keywords, whatever comes to mind, whatever they want to feel or experience. The words will be put up on a board, revealing the destination.
After a conversation with one of her students, Dee receives a phone call. The director of the project she was auditioning to be in has seen her tape. Based on what he has seen, he tells her they might have a part that is just right for her. Ecstatic, Dee closes the class, and tells them that no investments will be returned.
The rest of the Gang wake up the next day. They are covered in scratches and the bar has been trashed. The money in the register has been stolen and they all have a disgusting salty taste in their mouths. Frank deduces that the monkey did this, by getting them drunk, possibly even orally raping them. At the mention of this, Charlie immediately pukes. Frank just them remembers that the guy who sold him the monkey warned him about this. The monkey's grandfather was Fatty Arbuckle's monkey. Across generations, the monkeys are passed down to other celebrities, until they wind up getting drunk and pulling scams under bridges. Dennis suddenly remembers the vacation board.
When they go to take a look at it, the clues read "Monkey Beer Island of Green + Fight". The clues cannot be deciphered, so Dennis calls it off, asking why they can't just be normal people. Mac tells him that although the monkey may have been a pervert, he was also a genius. Taking note of the empty whiskey bottles littering the bar, Charlie suggests that the monkey might just have been pouring hakf a bottle of whiskey in each beer. Having come to this sudden conclusion, Mac replaces the word "monkey" on the board with the word "whiskey", so now it reads "Whiskey Beer Island of Green + Fight".
Dee arrives, and informs them of the acting gig that she has just landed. She has to leave tomorrow morning at six o'clock to get the first class flight ot Ireland, where they will be shooting the show. As Dee praises the monkey's drink, the rest of the Gang realize that all the clues lead up to one thing: Ireland.
