"The Gang Saves the Day" is the sixth episode of the ninth season, and the 100th episode overall, of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Synopsis[]

When a routine trip to a convenience store places the gang in the middle of an armed robbery, each of them is forced to explore how they would react in extreme situations.

Recap[]

12:15 PM, On a Wednesday, Philadelphia, PA

En route to the pub, the Gang stop at a convenience store. Soon after they enter, a hooded and armed man enters and robs the clerk. The Gang all hide in an aisle and each imagine different methods of handling the situation.

Mac imagines himself confronting and subduing the robber using his martial arts skills, leaving the rest of the gang in awe. The unmasked robber turns out to be a member of the Yakuza, and Mac is soon assaulted from all angles by dozens of ninjas. He bests them all and saves the gang (except for Dee, who was pushed into the path of a nunchuck-wielding ninja by Frank, Charlie & Dennis), but then also kills the owner of the store, having mistaken him for the Yakuza boss. A surviving ninja suddenly throws a shuriken into Mac's neck. As he dies, the Gang regrets ever doubting his awesomeness, and break down crying. Mac's spirit ascends to heaven, where he is escorted by two muscular, glistening angels to take his place by a muscular, glistening God's right hand, to ignore everyone's prayers.

In Dee's imagination, the rest of the Gang attempt to sacrifice her to the robber to save themselves, but the robber is revealed to be a woman, and offers to shoot the males of the Gang instead. Dee talks the robber down, takes her gun, and then swiftly executes Frank, Charlie, Mac, Dennis and the clerk. She pins the murders on the robber and goes into witness protection, becoming an extremely successful actress. She marries Josh Groban, but divorces him after seventeen minutes to marry Brad Pitt.

Dennis envisions himself being shot in the head while attempting to talk the robber down. Waking up in the hospital and being told by his doctor that his penis is non-functional, he asks to be euthanized, but reconsiders once he discovers that his rehabilitation nurse is the buxom Jackie Denardo. Jackie supports Dennis through the long and difficult recovery process. Afterwards, as Jackie and Dennis roller-skate, he expresses his love for her, upon which she accidentally rolls into traffic. At the hospital, Dennis is told by the doctor that the accident completely obliterated her breasts. Dennis asks for a moment alone with Jackie and smothers her with a pillow.

Frank's vision of handling things consists of him sneaking behind the counter to eat hotdogs over the sounds of an unseen shootout with the police, and Dee being mauled by police dogs and shot.

Charlie's fantasy is presented in the style of a hand-drawn animation. The Waitress enters the store, and Charlie saves her life by pushing Dee into the path of the robber's bullets. Charlie and the Waitress get married and move into a beautiful house built for them by Charlie's rat friends. Years later, as the last of the rats die, Charlie and the Waitress purchase ten babies from the baby store, the girls all growing up to be waitresses and the boys to be janitors. The Waitress eventually dies of old age, and Charlie attaches thousands of helium balloons to their house and triumphantly floats away in it.

Back in reality, the gang unanimously and wordlessly agree to all steal as much as they can carry and sprint for the exit.

Trivia[]

  • Out of all the signs in the convenience store, bottled water is the most expensive thing sold there.
  • The theme song to "Covington's House" in Sweet Dee's mini story is a parody of the Mr. Belvedere theme song, "According to Our New Arrivals" by Leon Redbone.
  • The raspy voice Mac uses in his fantasy sequence sounds much like Steven Seagal, as does his fighting style and squinty-eye look. This is a reference to the many movies and TV shows Seagal has done in the same style of fighting and terrible puns.
  • The fantasy sequence of Charlie is based on 'Up' as well as 'Ratatouille', both animations from Pixar.
    • In Charlie's fantasy sequence, The Waitress can be seen reading a story-time version of The Nightman Cometh.
    • Charlie refers to the Waitress as "Waitress" in his fantasy, suggesting he does not know/has forgotten her real name.
  • Dee dies in Mac, Frank, and Charlie's fantasies; her fate is unknown in Dennis', though she is missing when the rest of The Gang (briefly) visits him in the hospital. She kills the rest of The Gang in her fantasy, however.
